Our new minister, Hilary Smith, has joined us from Wirral. She writes...
My name is Hilary and I am delighted to have accepted a call to serve at some of the URC churches and LEPs in the Southport and Formby area.
Here is a little bit about myself: I was born in Shrewsbury, I have a twin sister who still lives in that area, and I was brought up in Welshpool. My mother was from Liverpool and my father was from Latvia. In 1981 I went to Liverpool University to study French, which was a four year course including a year abroad, which I spent in Poitiers.
In 1985 I joined the Merseyside police and served for 7 years in the Wirral area. I was married for 28 years to David who was also a police officer and we had two children, now well grown up! Sadly David died after a long illness and I am now married to Mike.
I have been a lifelong churchgoer – as a child I attended Welshpool Methodist Church and the Sunday school there was a huge influence in my life and my calling. My ‘sending’ church when I trained for the ministry was Christ Church, Port Sunlight. I trained at Northern College, Manchester and have until recently ministered for 12 years in the Parkgate/Wirral/Ellesmere Port areas.
I very much look forward to meeting you and ministering in Southport and Formby.
With all blessings,
Rev. Hilary Smith
